Leicester Airport is located in Stoughton, Leicestershire, United Kingdom, and the aerodrome is operated by the Leicester Aeroclub. Leicester Airport is used mainly for flight training and privately operated flights, there are no scheduled flights currently in operation at EGBG.
Construction of the airport dates back to 1942, and the airfield was originally operated as RAF Leicester East, which was later changed to Stoughton Aerodrome and in operation as such until 1974. There are 5 runways at Leicester Airport, three of which are asphalt, two have a grass surface. At 3068 feet, the longest runway is just under 1 km in length, enough to handle turbo-props such as the Beechcraft King Air 350, as well as small business jets such as the Embraer Phenom 300.
One of the key training operators at the airport is Helicentre Aviation. The company was initially based at Coventry Airport in the West Midlands, and moved to Leicester Airport at the end of 2009. Today Helicentre Aviation operates the Cabri G2 and Robinson R44 helicopters as part of its rotary-winged training fleet.
Leicester Airport has been designed from the ground up to blend perfectly into the English Countryside. The unique mix of soft rolling hills, short asphalt and grass runways, and the often challenging weather in this particular part of England, offer a great combination for some very interesting flying.
